Rev. Wariyapola Sri Sumangala

Rev. Sri Sumangala was born in Wariyapola of Kurunegala district. His father was Herath Mudiyanselage Bamunakotuwe Rala. His son Kirihami Later attended the Buddhist order. 
Under the Idawalugoda Dammapala of Asgiri Vihara. Later he became the chief priest of Shailthalarama old temple of Wariyapola. Today a privena has been established under the name of Wariyapola Sri Sumangala privena Education center in respect to him.


On the 2 of March 1815, everything had been arranged to sign the udarata Givisuma after the last king of Ceylon Sri Wikkramarajasinghe had been arrested. On thet day, Sri Sumangala thero was attending the usual duties of Dalada Maligawa. It had been planned to hoist both the Sinhala Flag and the British flagbefore the Dalada Maligawa after signing the memorandum. People of both sides were present there An impatient English soldier hoisted the English flag before the memorandum had been signed. At this very moment Sumangala thero was thinking about the bad aspects of the memorandum for the Sinhala people. At once, he saw the English flag flying in the sky and lost his temple.Rev. Sumangala come out of the temple and put down the English flag, trampled it and hoisted the Sinhala flag.This made the English soldiers present angry. But Jhon doily, the organizer of the event begged his pardon from Rev. Sumangala thero.

Reverend Sumangala wanted to reestablish the Sinhala kingship. So he secretly took the sacred tooth relic which was the symble of Sinhala kingship took away from the Dalada Maligawato hand over a Sinhala Buddhist for the kingship. During the 1818 sacred toothrelic was handed over to Weera kappitipola by Rev. Sumangala.But on the 2nd November 1818, Rev, Sumangala was caught by the English with the sacred tooth relic. Later Sri Sumangala thero was imprisoned for stealing the tooth relic On the 13th 1812 he was released. There after, Sri Lankan Buddhist monks always came forward to safeguard the country and nation. Because they took Sri Sumangala thero as an example.
