Poson festival

Poson is a very important religious festival forBuddhists in Sri Lanka. It is celebrated in June every year on a Poya day because it is on this day that Buddhism was introduced to Sri Lanka. arahath Mihindu Thero brought Buddhism to this country from India.

The Colombo Town Hall

The Old Town Hall building built in the year 1873 lies obscured in the busy Pettah Market environs. The present Town Hall is one of the most iconic building in Colombo. Located opposite the Vihara Maha Devi Park in Colombo 7 , the Town Hall was built during the British period between 1924 and 1928 to house the offices of the Colombo Munisipal Council (CMC ). The Colombo Mayor's office is located in the building.

The Spanish Armada

By 1588 King Philip Il of Spain finally had enough of Queen Elizabeth I and her English privateers like Drake. He assembled a huge fleet of Spanish warships called the Spanish Armada and sent them to crush the British and take over England.

The street childrenof Sri Lanka


We have met them on the streets. Children as young as five and six. Nobody cares for them. They sleep on pavements. They eat left overs. They spend their day doing odd jobs. It seems their numbers are increasing day by day. Street children have become a major social problem in Sri Lanka.

The Rambutan Season has come

The months of July and august are considered as the rambutan season in Sri Lanka.Rambutan trees in our home gardens are laden with red and yellow fruits during these months. Rambutan trees look as if they are illuminated with red and yellow bulbs, when seen from a distance.

Rev. Wariyapola Sri Sumangala

Rev. Sri Sumangala was born in Wariyapola of Kurunegala district. His father was Herath Mudiyanselage Bamunakotuwe Rala. His son Kirihami Later attended the Buddhist order. 
Under the Idawalugoda Dammapala of Asgiri Vihara. Later he became the chief priest of Shailthalarama old temple of Wariyapola. Today a privena has been established under the name of Wariyapola Sri Sumangala privena Education center in respect to him.

Rev. Hikkaduwe Sri Sumangala

He was born on 20th January 1827 in 1840. His teacher was Rev. Aruggamuwe Sri Rewatha. Hikkaduwe Sri Sumangala was a very celever student.

My favourite book

I was only twelve years old when I read martin Wickramasinghe's Madol Doova for the first tme. It is a very interesting children's adventure story. This book is so popular that it has been translated into several roreign languages too. It was also made into a film.

Kumaratunga Munidasa

Don Abiyes Kumaratunga and Nona Baba Kumaratunga of Idigasare, Diklwella had a son on 25th July 1887. He was Kumaratunga Munidasa. He had 13 sisters and brothers. Kumaratunga Munidasa was the twelveth.

Handicrafts of Sri Lanka

There are many handicrafts in Sri Lanka. Pottery, mask making, cane weaving and making puppets are some of these local crafts. Ambalangoda is famous for mask making industry.These craftsmen use wood to make various kinds of masks. They work hard to make beautiful masks.

The elephants in Sri Lanka

Many hundred years ago, in Sri Lankan jungles there were thousands and thousands of elephants. Those days there had always been a natural balance between animals, people and the rest of nature.But with the arrival of the English, the animals ware killed for sport. Later people started killing elephants for their valuable skins, and tusks.

Should women go out to work ?

Today in our society many women do not stay at home and look after their children. Most of the women are not housewives today. The tradinational pattern of women looking after children and doing all the household work has gone. They have to go for work due to various reasons.

Man and forest live in close relationship. The forest fulfill most of man's needs. He collect resin, cane, timber, food and fruits from forests. The fallen branch gives his fire wood. Forest are also an impartant part of the man's environment.

Community Bank helped flood victims

Community Bank of Kottala, Veyangoda helped the villagers of Kottala who have been rendered homeless due to the recent floods.

Nearly 100 families of this small village needed help to rebuild their houses. So the community bank of Kottala came forward to help them immediately under two types of programers.
