Kumaratunga Munidasa

Don Abiyes Kumaratunga and Nona Baba Kumaratunga of Idigasare, Diklwella had a son on 25th July 1887. He was Kumaratunga Munidasa. He had 13 sisters and brothers. Kumaratunga Munidasa was the twelveth.


At the beginning he learnt a lot by listening to the teacher his brothers and sisters.Later he attended the school in his village and privena. He passed grade six from the village school and then attended the St. Thomas College Matara. He studied English up to grade 7. Aftergrade seven he came home and started reading all the books in his father's personal library. It is there he laid his foundation stone to become an expert in Sinhala Language. In 1907, he studied at the Colombo teacher training schoolfor two years and passed his final examination with flying colours. After thet he was appointed as a teacher to a school in Kadugannawa. While he was teaching Sinhala grammer in this school, a certain student raised a question. Then and there Munidasa Kumaratunga decided to organize Sinhala grammer. During those days, his speech about Guththila Kavvaya and Kumaratunga's general knowledge books were released.

After teaching for about 8 years in Kadugannawa, Kumaratuga was promoted as a school inspector. He worked in this post up 1922. There after he worked as the principal at the teacher training college of Nittabuwa and Balapitiya. He did a great service to the Sinhala lite rature.

He was of the opinion, by developing the language the people who speak thet language could be developed and then the country in which that people live could be directed to freedom.

He worte a lot of boos. Hw worte a lot of books about Sinhala grammar. He worte a poems. He got other to write poems and books. He created a type of children's literature. He wanted to teach correct language from the beginning. He created a revalution in the fields of Sinhala literature, Sinhala language teaching and printed media. He pointed out the importance of learning in Sinhala. He started a public awareness program. '' Hela Hawula '' Mr. Kumaratunga Munidasa can be considered as a philosopher. Even today we use his grammar lessons. Kumaratunga's poems can be enjoyed by the adults and children a like. His poems for the children are very enjoyable and versatile. He wrote a lot of books for children '' Hathpana, Magul Kama, Heensaraya are some of the famous books. He had a very good knowledge about children's mind.

He started he '' Lakmini Pahana '' news paper. He did a lot to encourage the Sinhala People to fight for freedom. He revitalized the Sinhala language. In 1944 he passed away at the age of 57.
